Perched on the rocky shores of the Piscataqua River in Kittery Point, Maine, Fort McClary stands as one of New England’s most enduring coastal fortifications. Originally established in the early 18th century to defend one of America’s most strategically important harbors, the fort served through multiple conflicts, including the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Named in honor of Major Andrew McClary, one of the first officers killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Fort McClary reflects more than 250 years of American military history. Its distinctive granite blockhouse, earthworks, and commanding waterfront location offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience the evolution of coastal defense while enjoying sweeping views of the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor.

Today, Fort McClary is a Maine State Historic Site where history comes alive through preservation efforts, educational programs, and living history events. Maintained with the support of the Friends of Fort McClary, the fort continues to inspire visitors by preserving the stories of the soldiers, sailors, and citizens who helped shape our nation’s past.
